The main difference between a structural steel designer or engineer and a structural steel detailer is that the designer focuses on the overall structural system, while the detailer focuses on producing technical detailed drawings based on the designers information of the project:

  • Structural Steel Designer Also known as a structural engineer, this professional is responsible for the overall design of the structure. They calculate loads, determine materials, member sizes and ensure the structure is safe and compliant with building regulations and indemnifies their design.


  • Structural Steel Detailer

    The detailer is responsible for creating detailed drawings and plans for the construction of a steel structure. They focus on the creation of technical drawings of the project, such as the plans, elevations, sections and detail views that describes the exact construction elements required to fabricate and build the structure, in accordance to the Engineers information.


The collaboration between the engineers and detailers are crucial so to ensure that the structure is designed and detailed to the necessary industry standards.
